How long will it take me to relearn Portuguese?
Portuguese, spoken by approximately 255M, is a Romance language. It is a co-official language in East Timor, Equatorial Guinea and Macau, and is an official language for Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde, Geneva-Bissau, Mozambique, Angolia and São Tomeo. The Portuguese speakers are kniwe the Lusophone (Lusófono) and they belong to Lusofonia or the Lusophone World (Mundo Lusófono). These names come from Lusitania, the Roman province which has covered the same area as modern Portugal more or less.
Portuguese, which is a Romance language, is one of the easiest languages to master for any English native speaker.
Similarly, it is also quite easy to master for any other Romance language speaker like Spanish, Romanian, Italian etc. it is quite similar to English and all other romance languages, hence making it super easy. With that said, if you want to learn the language but wish to relearn it then in my opinion, it honestly shouldn’t take you as long. If anything, it should take you much less time in comparison to when you initially learnt the language.
Considering how easy Portugal’s is, you probably haven’t even forgotten as much. Instead, you just need a little bit of brushing up. You can follow the below steps in order to relearn the Portuguese language. Firstly, you need to make a note of all the things that you happened to remember in the language. It could be the vocabulary, or specific phrases and slang or maybe even the grammar and sentence formation. Just make a note of everything that you remember regarding the language. Secondly, make a note of those things that you are a little hazy on. Things that you believe require a little practice because you seem to have slightly forgotten it. Lastly, deduce all of the leftover things that you seem to have completely forgotten and therefore require practice from scratch. These are essentially those things that are going to take the longest for you to master in the process of re-learning Portuguese.
After this, I strongly suggest that you focus on all the aspects. The entire concept of re-learning Portuguese is basically relearning all the aspects that you have forgotten and just revising all the things that you remember. On the other hand, if you feel comfortable in first revising everything that you remember and then advancing to re-learning everything you have forgotten, then you’re free to do so. The process of relearning Portuguese requires the identification of what you have forgotten and what you remember as that is extremely important while trying to relearn Portuguese.
