I understand Chinese, but I can’t speak it well. Why?
China is one of the linguistically wealthiest countries in the world. The most commonly spoken language in China is standard Chinese. Most linguists classify all of the spoken Chinese species which form the Sinitic branch as the Sino-Tibetan language family (spoken by a Han majority ethnic group, and by numerous ethnic minorities in Greater China), claiming that the original proto-Sino-Tibetan languages were proto-Indo-European.
Let's see why you cannot speak the Chinese language well
Chinese is known to be one of the toughest languages to master, especially for an English native speaker. This is due to some of the major differences between the two languages. Chinese can be rather tough to speak as well. With that said, if you manage to understand the language but cannot speak it well enough, then no worries. There are a variety of ways you can manage to learn to speak it well. The reason why you cannot manage to speak the language well is simply because you haven’t practiced your speaking skills enough. In order to improve a certain skill, you must practice it regularly, if you escape this practice then you’re automatically going to have a tough time while trying to utilize it later on.
As mentioned previously, if you understand the language, it isn’t that tough to learn to speak it. For starters you can start reading aloud. Pick up any random Chinese literature and read it out loud. You can even hold a conversation with yourself in the mirror. You can shadow other speakers when they speak. You can watch movies in Chinese without any subtitles and learn the pronunciation of each word. You can even hold a conversation with other Chinese speakers or natives or learners. Either way, in order to improve your speaking skill, you have to actually speak. You have to utilize any method of practicing the language which requires you to speak. Finally, I suggest finding a Chinese speaking trainer. A trainer can help guide, test and improve your skill in every manner possible. The trainer will be able to test your level of skill, then guide you on how you can further improve the same. Along with the trainer you definitely also need to contribute a significant amount of effort. If you start practicing your speaking skills daily with the help of a trainer, you will definitely achieve fluency in Chinese in no time.
Finally,
There is still no knowledge of and study of the link between Chinese and other Sino-Tibetan languages and the reconstruction of proto-Sino-Tibetan. More than 70 million people reside in China from 55 different national minorities, and while each minority has its own language, many minority groups have no separate written media for their own languages. Remember, you haven’t lived enough if you have no knowledge about another culture. And how best to broaden your horizons? Learn a new language. Speak in the new tongue. It’s very satisfying.
