Tips and tricks to know
First, calm down. Maybe you are a serious learner and keen to know how exactly to start your Chinese learning journey by paying a little budget of “school fee’ instead of getting confused with those “learning materials”. Especially for those beginners, it is advisable to go ahead with language classes or learning groups. You may even join the online courses so you can learn them anytime that you are on the go. Carry on your basic classes for at least 100 days or approximately 3 months. During the journey, you will understand how exactly Chinese works, and reinforce what you have learned. Of course, practices always make perfect. You are going to learn how to speak and sound more like a native.
Sooner and later, you will start subscribing to more Chinese video channels on Youtube. You are more familiar with the Chinese language by learning from their immediate living and culture by learning from a strong support network – learning from social media and TV networks. Until then, you will learn from the “essence of life”, you will get motivated easily and have fun throughout the learning journey.
So, the best way on how to learn Chinese effectively, it is still advisable to get started from an actual learning course for at least 3 months or 100 days. The best app and website is Multibhashi.

Depending on your situation you could choose among the following:
- Talk with Chinese people for free: The online platform Practice and Learn Foreign Languages will help you find language partners for free to speak with a native Chinese – you’ll have to chat with them in English or your language as well.
- Get a teacher online: If you want to get a proper teacher, I can recommend the following platform: One-to-one language lessons – you can choose your teacher and have your lesson at your convenience from home or anywhere else. It’s also very flexible, you can book 30 minutes but cancel easily before if you have any problem.
- Attend intensive courses in China: The fastest but most expensive way in my opinion is to go to China and take intensive courses (4 hours a day). I went to Mandarin Capital in Hangzhou and was very pleased with my progress there.
- Self-study with books: If you do like books, I very much like the HSK Standard Coursebooks. They prepare you for the HSK exams and every level includes a Lesson Book, WorkBook, and audio CD.
- Watch movies: the site iqiyi.com will help you find movies or series in Chinese (with subtitles in Chinese). There are lots of free resources there (the ones that do not have the “VIP” banner on the thumbnail).
Learning a foreign language such as any Chinese dialect to the point that you can function independently in that language is not an intellectual task such as learning philosophy, a natural science, history, or most non-foreign language courses in school. There are grammatical rules to be sure, but somehow babies learn their native language without textbooks teaching grammatical rules. Grammatical rules are sometimes written in a confusing manner. An alternate method would be to see short sentences or phrases illustrating the rule. Learning to function in any foreign language is more like learning to play a sport or a musical instrument in that you are acquiring a new habit. As such it requires practice to the point that you are comfortable in it.
It helps tremendously to have some audio recordings available so that you can hear the sounds of the language. If you have no native speakers available, either inexpensive recordings or even using a program such as Google Translate is better. Repeated listening is needed to get your ears used to hear the language. Intellectually you can learn the tones as described in the textbook but the usefulness of that is limited. Practicing listening to the words individually and in short phrases is more important towards learning to use the tones. Repeated watching of foreign films would be recommended once you have reached an intermediate level of ability.
