What can I do every day to improve my Russian skills?
Russian dialects are classified into three groups: the Northern group (from St. Petersburg eastwards across Siberia), the Southern group (in much of central and southern Russia), and the Central group (in the rest of the country (between Northern and Southern).
Russian can be a tough language to master. But if you’ve planned on mastering this challenging language then you’re already a step ahead of most others who tend to feel this language.
There are four major skills that anyone must focus on while improving the language as a whole. These four languages are listening skills, speaking skills, writing skills and reading skills. While most would tell you to learn these skills separately, there are tricks and tips to manage to learn two skills at the same time while doing a single activity. This method would also help you save time that you could use in rectifying any mistakes that you could’ve made or learn it in a more advanced manner. For starters, I always advise being mindful of the goals you create for yourself.
It is important you are careful of your goals as these goals wouldn’t just help you in gauging how far you have gotten from the start line but they also tend to act as a motivator. Once you have created appropriate and sensible goals for yourself, it is time to move on to improving each skill. Firstly, you can start with listening and speaking skills. Try listening to native’s talk. Listen to each of their words very carefully and note how they pronounce each and every word in every sentence they use. Also, take note of any slang that is used or any common phrases in the form of proverbs used. This will not only help you identify the Russian language but it will also help you when you decide to start speaking the language yourself.
You can also watch Russian movies with English subtitles. Next up, we have the reading skills. Reading skills are extremely versatile and therefore, can be paired up with almost any other skill. For example, reading skills can be paired up with listening skills by listening to Russian music and reading English lyrics or listening to English music and reading the Russian translation. They can also be paired up with speaking skills by reading Russian literature out loud. They can also be paired up with writing skills by copying Russian literature from newspapers, magazines, articles, etc. next on the list we have speaking skills. In my opinion, the best way to improve your speaking skills is by speaking.
You can first talk to yourself in the mirror and then once you have gathered enough confidence, you can talk to other Russian speakers, learners or even natives. Finally, we have writing skills. Writing skills tend to be the toughest for any student to master. You need to focus on each word and sentence formation as well as make sure that the grammar is perfect. This will genuinely require a lot of time to improve, nevertheless, the only suggestion that I have for you is to practise daily even if it is just for an hour but continuously practice without a single break.
Finally,
In the modern literary Russian, the consonant system of the Northern dialect is combined with the vowel system of the Southern dialect, resulting in a combination of the two dialects. In contrast to other European languages, these three dialects have fewer differences than most other European languages. To enjoy the best of life learn a new language.
