What language do you wish you had learned?
The world is a diverse platform that is full of cultures, practices and languages. Throughout our life, we come across many vibrant cultures and beautiful languages and many times we wish we were either part of the said culture or could speak the said language. Now, it isn’t entirely impossible to learn every single language, but at the same time, it isn’t feasible either. Similarly, when we travel, we wish we could communicate to the natives without having to use google translate. So, when it comes down to it, people often ask, what language do you wish you had learnt? Personally, I would have wanted to learn French and let me tell you why.
First of all, French is a global language as recognized by the United Nations and a very influential language as it is a language of culture, including art, cuisine, dance, and fashion. Secondly, learning French helps one improve his artistic and critical thinking skills. Furthermore, the language of love is a Romance language of the Indo-European family. Let’s consider it’s rich history for a second, it descended from the Vulgar Latin of the Roman Empire, as did all Romance languages. French allows you to enter the culture of over 300 million French speakers in more than 50 countries worldwide. Today, owing to France’s past overseas expansion, there are numerous French-based creole languages, most notably Haitian Creole. Interestingly, a French-speaking person or nation may be referred to as Francophone in both English and French. French is an official language in 29 countries across multiple continents, most of which are members of the Organization Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), a community of 84 countries that share the official use or teaching of French. French is also the 18th most natively spoken language in the world, the 6th most spoken language by a total number of speakers and the second or third most studied language worldwide.
Impressive right? That’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to French. Let’s now understand why anyone should, apart from me., even consider learning French?
- French is considered to be a major language of international communication as it is the only language along with English that is spoken across five continents.
- Apart from being known as the language of love, French is also known as the language of culture. Learning France is the equivalent of opening a new door to food, fashion, art, science and literature.

- France houses some of the best Universities in the entire world. With higher education imparting institutions like the Sorbonne and Pierre Marie Curie University, learning French is bound to give you an edge when considering these Universities.
- In fact, learning a decent level of French also enables some students to achieve a government grant to enrol into any postgraduate course of their choice and ultimately procure a globally recognized degree.
- Learning French means being able to communicate with 300 million speakers world wide. With French as the third most used language on the internet, you can communicate with these 300 million speakers online as well.

- French also enables an individual to secure many jobs in multinational companies as these days MNCs require students who can speak more than just one language and what better than the one spoken by a huge clientele.
- This might come as a surprise but the language of love and culture is in fact, an analytical language. It focuses on logic, reasoning and critical thinking. French prepares an individual with important skills for debates like negotiation and case presentation.
- Finally, learning French helps you learn more than one language. Essentially, due to its uncanny similarities with other Romance languages like Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, etc, learning French alone is bound to give you a headstart to learning the rest.
Careers like Translator, Interpreters, Flight attendants, Editors, Ambassadors or Diplomats, Lawyers and Think Tank staff, all prescribe an individual to learn French due to different reasons but ultimately because French either helps them develop an extra skill or expand their knowledge.
Finally,
At this point of time, we all understand that no-one can survive in this competitive industry with the knowledge of just one language. Therefore, learning more than one language has turned into a necessity instead of an option. Moreover, many people shy away from learning a new language as they’re either unaware of which one to pursue or how much effort to put into it. In my opinion, I wish I had learnt French as that would’ve opened up a million opportunities in different sectors. French helps develop not just the brains of an individual but also their mental strength and skills. An analytical language that promotes love and culture, it helps an individual grow as a person. French is an unbiased language and helps people ranging from artists to ambassadors. It is also one of the easiest languages to learn for a native English speaker or a native Romance language speaker.
