Why is Korean so famous?

While some linguists suggest that the Korean language is a language isolate, like Japanese, some others suggest it could be a part of the Dravidian languages due to its similarities to the Tamil language. Apart from these, it is often believed to have associations in the “Altaic” language group and therefore supposedly related to Turkish and Finnish; however, all such theories were dismissed. a larger number of scholars believe that Korean is an isolated language as its grammar is in no way similar to Chinese grammar despite the fact that up to 60 per cent of Korean words come from the Chinese language perhaps due to, its historical link to the Chinese language. Only about 35 per cent is of words in the Korean language are of Korean origin, while another 5% are loanwords from other languages.

Korean is a globally popular language spoken by over 80 million speakers. Korean is also regarded as the 22nd most spoken native language around the globe. Finally, one of the most important factors that has contributed to the growth of the popularity of this language is definitely the Korean entertainment wave. The Korean entertainment industry which includes K drama and K-pop has become an international sensation. In recent times many K-pop artists have not only found a spot in the ‘billboard hot 100’ but have also collaborated with many popular artists from the western and european world. Korea is also proud to be home to Oscar-winning movies like ‘Parasite’ and to many intense and heart-wrenching Netflix thrillers.

The North and South Korean languages have evolved to include distinct vocabularies, pronunciation, and even grammatical rules due to the long period of separation between the two countries. Like Japanese, Korean has a complex honorary system, with various verb endings and vocabulary depending on the relationship you have with the person you are speaking with. The highest honorary form is particularly reserved in North Korea for the great leader who has a final verb, the “too” (“op”).
