Well, there is no hard and fast rule as to which should be the easiest language to learn for an English speaker, but the connoisseurs of many languages are of the opinion that Spanish is the easiest language to learn for an English language speaker. It is because, vocabularies of both the languages match to a great extent. There are many words, phrases, which are similar. Even pronunciations are closer as compared to the proximity of English with other languages belonging to the same class or family.

Spanish is followed by Italian in the list. One might be surprised, but it’s true. Many European languages have evolved from a common ancestor. It is a fact, though, that English came in a lot later, and succeeded in winning the race. Today, the most spoken language in the world as per the world Ethnologue of recent years is English. Spanish stands at the second position.  

After Spanish and Italian come Portuguese in the list of languages that English language speakers find easy to learn. And then, follows French. French is a language that is not very close to English but is easy to learn if one is fluent in English. Grammar rules differ to some extent; there are more and clearer specifications with terms to gender, number, conjugation, etc. in French. Even the pronunciations of most of the words do not match, but there are many words that English and French languages share.
