Introduction:
Sanskrit is a very ancient language, but it is not dead. It is very much up to date and alive. Sanskrit can be spoken and used in daily life and it can be learned in a lively and enjoyable way. The study of Sanskrit may become difficult if the learning process is based only on understanding and remembering dry grammar rules and their application in translation exercises – what we can call “grammar-translation-method”. This kind of method makes it difficult to learn any language, and it is becoming less and less popular all over the world.
There are two types of Sanskrit:
The first one is Modern Sanskrit which follows all rules of grammar and most words have only one meaning. This is Sanskrit taught in Indian schools. It is relatively easy to learn. It becomes quite easy if you know Hindi. It becomes even simpler if you are good at grammar.
The other language is classical Sanskrit. The language of the Vedas. It is the language that was widely spoken during the Vedic age. Like all widely spoken and old languages, it was messy and complicated. (English is another example). The complication is enhanced by the fact that very few people know it today. The key to learning Classical Sanskrit is to learn the Modern version first and then move to religious scriptures.
Why can't you understand Sanskrit?
First of all, to learn Sanskrit you have to have a good grasp of Hindi or a similar language. Most of the words in Hindi are adapted from Sanskrit so they have similar meanings. The script of both of them is also similar. With English it isn’t that easy, as you have to cram all the words and their meanings. Most of the words seem ridiculous in english. So if you know Hindi you are a step closer. If not, well then you need to prepare yourself for some serious cramming. You need to really have focus. Because with Sanskrit they have a lot of word forms
How are you studying? How many hours per day/week? I can’t see how anyone could give you helpful, specific advice without knowing more. Try your best. The most important point is that the growing ability to handle the live flow of language should be the basis of learning grammar and not the other way around. Unfortunately or fortunately Sanskrit is a very complex language and, as such, generally quite difficult to study and acquire. The orthodox period of training in the tradition is of 12 years but to master reading skills, which is unfortunately often the only skill developed by western scholars, it will take much less time. It depends a lot on motivation, discipline, and of course, the single talent. Then of course one has to figure out the reasons why he or she wants to learn Sanskrit, especially what kind of literature one wants to focus on. In fact, apart from poetry, very rarely we will find in the texts the entire grammar structure of the Sanskrit language developed and, as in the shaastric style it happens to be, the language is very much technical and so quite easy to understand from a mere linguistic point of view at least. Speaking or understanding abilities might be developed too, but they require a totally different type of work, the difference between written Sanskrit and spoken Sanskrit being often huge, apart from when it’s an experienced pandit to speak. To conclude, Sanskrit is for sure one of the most complex Indo European languages, but it is always difficult if not impossible to translate such complexity in terms of learning difficulties one can experience, due to other factors which individually play a role, such as motivation, previous experiences with foreign language learning, discipline, etc.
