I can understand Spanish but I can’t speak it well, why?
Every journey has some obstacles. It does not mean that you are empty-handed. You surely collect and learn many things while moving towards your goals. Learning a language is a journey full of interaction, lessons, exploring and obstacles. No person can be an expert at everything. Learning a second language is not an easy task. You have to start right from the basic alphabets to small words and use proper grammar in sentences. This is not enough. In spite of learning everything, you would require extra effort in being able to speak correctly and fluently. Usually, it is easier for people to grasp the initial stages of learning a language that is understanding common vocabulary, understanding the meaning of sentences and what people are saying. The real test is when you are demanded to speak Spanish fluently in public. That is when you realise that you fall short of words to complete your sentence or in spite of knowing so much vocabulary you just do not find the proper words to fit in. Sometimes grammar is the problem.
Sw, whys is it thats while I can understand Spanish but I can’t speak it well?
Let me tell you that you are not alone who is sailing in this boat. This is the problem with the majority of people. They know everything about the language except speaking it completely and properly. One of the major problems why people can’t speak the language fluently is because they stop learning. They feel that they have completed their course or maybe they have learned everything that is required for the language and hence stop learning. But this is the stage where you need to enhance your skills and dedicate more time to be able to speak the language fluently. So do not just focus on collecting notes and collecting all vocabulary words but rather indulge time in learning to practise them and to speak Spanish.
You will need a lot of self practise before you are able to have a conversation in public. For self- practising, you can speak in front of the mirror. This is one of the best tricks to learn to speak. Choose a topic of your choice and stand in front of the mirror and start speaking on that topic in Spanish. You will be able to rectify your own mistake by knowing at what point you were not able to complete the sentence and how to complete it now. By doing this continuously you will understand your flaws as well as overcome them.
Converse with people who have similar interests or are in the journey with you is extremely important. If you think you are not an expert at the language and hence do not want to speak in public. You can at least speak to those people who are also learning the language. This way you will also be able to practise and learn from others. Sharing of opinions and thoughts is very transparent in this process which makes it interactive as well as you learn many things from this process.
You can do many things to make it more thrilling and useful for you by travelling to an area where people speak Spanish making friends with such people travelling and dining with them. I think this is the best way to get Spanish into your blood. You will need to surround yourself with Spanish and indulge in speaking the language no matter what mistakes you make but you just have to do it.
