What can I do every day to improve my Portuguese skills? 

Portuguese is a Romanesque language that developed more than two thousand years ago, at a time when the Romans arrived on the Iberian Peninsula, mainly modern-day Portugal and Spain, in the European peninsula. In 216 BC Romans came in speaking Latin Vulgar, also referred to as Latin Colloquial, which is the Latin language of which the Roman languages were evolving.

There are multiple activities you can do to improve your Portuguese skills. To begin with, first set appropriate goals. What is your aim? What is your fluency goal? And finally, how much time do you have? Considering all of these facts, create logical and appropriate goals which are reasonable enough to be achieved in the limited amount of time you have. 

Listening skills:

This one is pretty self-explanatory. In order to develop your Portuguese listening skills, you must simply listen. But you must not only listen. You need to listen carefully and concentrate on every aspect of the language. Listen to the words spoken, phrases used, slang used, grammar applied and so on. You need to absorb as much knowledge as you can just by listening to professionals or natives talk. Listening skills are some of the most important skills for any individual to master. It is not only important for personal development and growth but also extremely important while learning a new language. 

Speaking skills:

Speaking skills are the second most important skill after listening. Once you’ve slowly started understanding and picking up the language, you must try to utilize it. To begin with, you can learn simple sentences, like ‘hello, how are you?’ and a few other simple greetings. You can also learn to introduce yourself and try to hold a conversation with another speaker or native. Do not be afraid to make mistakes and ask for feedback. Reading skills:

Next up is how to read Portuguese. There’s absolutely no point in simply listening and speaking without being able to read a single thing. If you need to achieve true fluency in the language, then you must learn to read the language as well. In order to improve this skill, you can focus on reading Portuguese literature, magazines, newspapers and books.

Writing skills:

Finally, the toughest of all the skills, the writing skills of Portuguese. Writing skills are generally always considered to be the toughest to improve in every language. In order to improve your writing skills, you must practice daily. There are no shortcuts to this skill. You just have to practice to keep improving. Try copying Portuguese literature and gradually advance to formulating your own sentences.

The Iberian Peninsula was conquered by Germanic tribes when the Roman Empire collapsed in the period between CE 409 and CE 711 and introduced their languages in the region. The Spanish and Portuguese were also influenced by the Moorish invasion in 711 CE. Modern Portuguese as we know it today has between four hundred and eight hundred Arabic words.
