Japanese is notoriously the toughest language to master in the entire world.
Even when compared to other East Asian languages like Mandarin or Korean, Japanese still ranks as one of the toughest languages to master. The language itself has three different sets of alphabets Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji. Many of the building blocks of Japanese tend to confuse a lot of students and is also extremely difficult according to CEFR for any English native speaker to master.
On the other hand, French is considered to be by far the easiest language to master, according to CEFR for any English native speaker.
Most of its complexities are very similar to one another and the differences are very minimal in nature. Making French by far the easiest language to master in the entire world simply because most of the world speaks English either professionally or at least has a decent level of fluency in English.
Hence, in my personal opinion, French is automatically the easiest language to master especially when compared to Japanese.
Japanese on the other hand is the toughest language to master in the entire world. With that said it isn’t impossible to learn Japanese . It is definitely an extremely fun language to master, especially considering their beautiful culture.

With that stated, in my view, learning French is always preferable because it is the most similar to English and makes learning other romance languages, on the other hand Japanese can be rather challenging to master.
