Adverbs
Adverbs are quite similar to adjectives as adverbs are also considered as describing words. But the basic difference between the two is that adjectives are used in a sentence to modify nouns whereas adverb is used to modify verbs, adjectives, clauses, another adverb, or any other phrase.
In the given examples, usage of adverbs to modify other parts of speech are demonstrated clearly.
  • Adverbs when modifying verbs: Krishna talks loudly.
  • Adverbs when modifying adjectives: Sumana is very beautiful.
  • Adverbs when modifying another adverb: Meghna eats too slowly.

More examples:

  1. Oxygen is very much essential to live. Here, very much” is acting as describing phrase. Hence, very much” is an adverb.
  2. The concert was awesomely good. Here, awesomely” is describing the adjective good”. Hence,awesomely” is an adverb.
  3. Preeti decided to buy a laptop. Here, to buy a laptop” is an adverb phrase that describes decided”.
  4. I heartily congratulated Sapna. Here, heartily” modifies the word congratulated”. Hence,heartily” is an adverb.
  5. She always wakes up early. Here. always” is modifying early”. Hence, always” is an adverb.

Types of Adverbs

1. Adverb of manner

Adverb of manner explains, how a thing is being done. We mostly use the suffix “ly” with the adjectives like quickly, slowly, rapidly, awfully, greatly etc.

Examples:

  • Seema was badly injured in the accident.
  • She fluently speaks many languages.

2. Adverb of Frequency

Adverb of frequency refers to how often things are being done. Such adverbs include rarely, frequently, occasionally, seldom, often, never, always etc.

Examples:

  • Sukanya seldom goes to temple.
  • Krish always participates in school activities.

3. Adverb of Place

Adverb of place basically focusses on location. It refers to the action of the verb i.e. its distance, direction, movement etc. They include here, there, nearby, forward, up, down etc.

Examples:

  • Please put your bag there.

4. Adverb of Degree

Adverb of degree refers to the intensity of something being happened. It describes the level or the extent. For ex: extremely, quite, almost, just, totally, very etc.

Examples:

  • The weather was extremely cold.
  • The guest had just arrived for dinner.

5. Adverb of Time

Adverb of time is defined to answer questions like, when”, how long”,how often”, etc. These adverbs tell us about the time, when an action happened and also tell us for how long it happened. For ex: yesterday, hours, all day, tomorrow, later, etc.

Examples:

  • Teacher will speak to you later.
  • I met my aunt yesterday.

6. Adverb of Purpose

They are also known as adverbs of reasons. These words exhibit a particular reason or a purpose of an action that why it took place. For ex: in order to, hence, therefore, consequently, since, thus etc.

Examples:

  • Work hard so that you can get good marks.
  • Since it was raining, I was drenched.

7. Adverb of Quantity

Adverb of quantity informs about the quantity of a particular thing. That means how much is there .For ex: much, more, fewless etc.

Examples:

  • There is too much fog.
  • Only few people attended the seminar.

8. Focusing Adverbs

These are attention seekers. That means , these adverbs point to a particular clause of a sentence. For ex: mainly, mostly, at least, especially etc.

Examples:

  • The puppet show was arranged in the party especially for the children.
  • At least Namita gave the correct answer.
