What level of French is considered fluent?

The French courses follow the directives of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This framework provides various methods of learning through teaching and assessing languages that describe a foreign language on a  proficiency scale.

For those who master the language, the proficiency of the language is measured on a six level scale from A1 up to C2. This six level scale of progression is widely accepted as a Europe standard and it is also increasingly worldwide.

C1 and C2 level of French is considered fluent 

Proficient User

C1 – or advanced

At this level, you can understand a wide range of longer texts, and recognise the meaning of words. You can speak to yourself fluently and clearly without searching for any new expressions. Language is used flexibly and effectively for academic and professional purposes. You will be able to give clear and structured text on complex subjects by using connectors and cohesive devices.

C2 fluent user

At this level, you can understand everything that you hear or read. You will know all the information that is spoken from different written sources and you can reconstruct the sentences into a suitable presentation. You will be able to express yourself spontaneously, fluently and precisely even in more complex situations.

Other levels of French

Basic User

A1 – beginner

At this level, you can understand everyday situations and all the basic phrases of a concrete type. You can introduce yourself with the question and answer about personal details such as where they live, what they know and what they have. You will be able to interact in a simple way and be prepared to help.

A2 – elementary

At this level, you can understand sentences that are used in areas of immediate expressions. For example family information, shopping, employment, local geography. You can speak in routine tasks that are involved through familiar and routine matters. You will be able to describe different aspects simply in the environmental areas of immediate need.

Independent User

B1- intermediate

At this level, you can understand the points on familiar matters that are encountered in office, college or school, cooperate with situations like travelling in an area where the language is spoken and can speak on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. You will be able to experience events, hopes and ambitions for opinions and plans.

B2 – upper intermediate

At this level, you can understand the ideas of concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in the specific field. You can interact with others at a certain level of fluency without any strain. You will be able to give a clear and detailed speech with an explanation of a specific issue. 

 

Finally, no one can reach this fluency level without starting as a beginner. To attain this level of fluency in French there are various sources both offline and online.
