Determiners
y, the, some, this, each, and etc. এই ধরণের শব্দগুলিকে বলে Determiners বা নির্ধারক। এই শব্দগুলি nouns বা বিশেষ্যর আগে ব্যবহার করা হয়। Determiners বিভিন্ন ধরণের হয়ঃ
Possessives: my, your, his, our, its, their
Quantifiers: a few, fewer, much, more, some, most, many etc.
Articles: a, an, the
Numbers: one, two, three
Demonstratives: that, these, those, this
কিছু বহুল ব্যবহৃত Determiners এর একটি তালিকা নিচে দেওয়া হল।

অনেক ক্ষেত্রেই noun বা বিশেষ্যর আগে কোনো determiner ব্যবহার করা হয় না, এগুলিকে বলে zero determiners।
উদাহরণ: Cats love milk.
Determiners এর কী প্রয়োজন?
প্রধানত দুটি কারণে এগুলি ব্যবহার করা হয়ঃ প্রথমত, কিছু উল্লেখ বা নির্দেশ করা এবং দ্বিতীয়ত, কোনো কিছু সংখ্যায় ব্যক্ত করা বা কিছুর পরিমাণ নির্দেশ করা।
Referring Determiners:
এগুলি নির্দেশ করে কী বা কার সম্পর্কে আমরা কথা বলছি। Possessives, articles, এবং demonstratives হল সর্বাধিক ব্যবহৃত referring determiners।
উদাহরণ: A: Where is the magazine?
B: It’s on the table.
এখানে, ‘the’ শব্দটি এমন একটি noun বা বিশেষ্যর আগে বসানো হয়েছে যার ব্যপারে বক্তা এবং শ্রোতা দুজনেই আগে থেকে জানে।
Quantifying determiners:
এগুলির সাহায্যে কোনো কিছু সংখ্যায় কতগুলি বা কত পরিমাণে উপস্থিত আছে সেটা বোঝানো হয়।
উদাহরণ: Four people were killed in the accident.
There are some chocolates here for you.
উপরের উদাহরণগুলি দেখে আপনি নিশ্চয় বুঝতে পেরেছেন আপনার English conversation skills বা ইংরেজিতে কথা বলার দক্ষতা আরো বাড়াতে determiners শেখার প্রয়োজনীয়তা কতখানি। এগুলি এমন কিছু শব্দ যেগুলি আমরা রোজ খেয়াল করে বা না করেই ব্যবহার করি। কোন determiner টি কোথায় প্রয়োগ করতে হবে সেটা জানা খুবই জরুরী। ইংরেজিতে কথা বলার একটানা অভ্যেস করলেই determiners এর সঠিক এবং উপযুক্ত ব্যবহার রপ্ত করা সম্ভব হবে।
