English has now become a global language. With millions of speakers speaking this language, it has brought down the language barrier and allowed people to unified. They can travel, work, and interact with other cultures. Also English is simple enough to learn as it doesn’t have complicated symbols and characters. People from all over the country can now contribute to art and science using this global language.
But what about people who don’t speak the English language? How do they feel?
Let us learn their point of view.
Technology has English centered:
Art and science are heavily dominated by the English language. Research papers are submitted in English as it is widespread and can be understood by most people. Most international companies use English in various activities such as publishing, science, and technology advancement.
Since this is the case, it brings about many disadvantages to non-English speakers who may be very well talented but can’t join the global stage due to language limitations. There are so many people out there who want to contribute to science, but can’t because they don’t know enough English.
English speakers have become the gatekeepers of science. By keeping those gates closed, we’re missing out on a lot of perspectives and a lot of good research.

Loss of languages:
Many non-English speakers are also afraid that if they start speaking the English language then, they will lose the connection with their mother tongue. Turns out, their worries aren’t unfounded. Many languages are now endangered and some even extinct causing extreme cultural loss, just because speakers shifted to other languages that are popular.
Many parents also put more emphasis on the English language and this causes kids to not reach a proficient level in their mother tongue. This will only amplify generation to generation until one day, they will lose all contact with the native tongue.

Loss of employment opportunities:
The business world is dominated by the English language. This means that employers will prefer English speakers rather than someone who may be more talented but doesn’t understand English. Employers think it will cost them additional time if they employ a non-English speaker. Talent is secondary to them. This demotivates a lot of people and re-inforces in their mind that without English language, they will never get a job.
A lot of talent is wasted in this way. Although English has united the business world and made it easier for deals to happen but it has provided many demerits to non-English speakers.

Feel behind:
Non-English speakers can feel left out and ashamed because they do not know the English language. All of the world around them is moving forward and more and more things are being done in the English language which can ultimately make them feel a bit at loss. They may also feel embarrassed by the fact that they do not speak English.
In addition to this, others may also look down upon them and cause them to lose many opportunities.

In the end, I would just like to say that it’s great if you know English but definitely do not make others feel less about them if they do not know it. Also don’t lose touch with your mother tongue as it causes great destruction to cultural diversity. It is important for people to remember their roots, and language is a very integral part of one’s identity.
