Online learning the 21st-century revolution
Post the recent pandemic it will be a different world for us. We may be heading towards a paradigm shift in the way we do our learning. Covid-19 came up with a blast and left us no choice but to move to online learning. As we move ahead, it is a tough decision to make a choice between offline and online learning – which one is the best for you? Let’s take a peek into the two modes and make our own choice!
To clarify the concept, online learning is a recent phenomenon that came into being just a few years back. The teacher/tutor takes virtual classes from his home or office and the learner remains on the other side of the screen learning from the comforts of his/her home.
Offline learning has remained in practice for ages and is the traditional method where the learner visits a school or place of learning physically and takes lessons and gets trained.
I remember having looked for ‘German classes online’ intending to learn the language in December 2017 and I had wished what if there were more choices. Today, in 2021 January, there are several platforms offering me courses ranging from one month to six months to even a year-long course!
People have come to accept and adapt to learning via the screens and many of them find it extremely beneficial. However, at the same time, I find students who are waiting to rush back to schools as they miss it badly.
Let’s have a look at the advantages and disadvantages of both these modes of learning and see what works best for each of us.
1) Online learning
- The most important advantage of learning online is that you remain in the comfort of your home/own space and do not require travelling to another place.
- It saves time on the commute. Many hours are spent by people just to reach their alma mater in order to learn. So, if I were to save a couple of hours and use it for something else, it is a lot of effort and time saved.
- Also, this mode gives you the opportunity to revisit your classes if the same are recorded. So, classes on Byjus, Vedantu and such give you the option to revise your lessons at your own time and leisure.
- You get a lot of choices. If you are planning to learn German online, you can choose from a range of options. You may take up the one that fits your time schedule as well as your pocket.
- However, this mode comes with its own disadvantages too! You are a lone learner, sitting alone which can get boring at times.
- The absence of your mentor in front of you in person makes you easily diverted and less attentive. There is hardly any competition.

2) Offline Learning
- Yes, you have to commute and it not only takes time, it also costs you a bit more than sitting at home and doing the learning.
- As the pandemic made you sit back home, this is a reason several children fall sick with communicable infections.
- You are not flexible with respect to adjusting the study timing with your other activities. You are bound to school/college timings.
- However, the traditional way of learning has its own advantages. The physical presence of a teacher gathers a better attention span. The teacher is available to clear doubts immediately.
- You learn many life skills and other interpersonal skills while you learn in groups and with mutual interactions. You are more competitive with your peer group to put that extra pressure to perform better.
- The structured teaching-learning process and a disciplined environment helps you prepare better for the future.

Though many people continue to support the traditional offline mode of learning over the online ones, it is time to sit back and refocus our preferences and choose the best for our requirements.
